John Wesley, the great 18th century field preacher, traveled over 250,000 miles and preached over 40,000 sermons in his life. As a young man, John Wesley was greatly impressed by a man in England who said to him: "Sir, you wish to serve God and go to heaven. Remember you cannot serve Him alone. You must therefore find companions or you must make them. The Bible knows nothing of solitary religion." A famous loner and workaholic, these words resonated with Wesley. He looked from that point on to partner with others who would sharpen him as ‘iron sharpens iron’.
Wesley once said, “Give me one hundred men who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen, such alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of heaven upon earth.” Wesley challenged men at a conference in England in August of 1771 that “Our brethren in America call aloud for help. Who are willing to go over and help them?” Over one hundred men, such as Francis Asbury, responded to the need and became gospel circuit riders – covering America with spiritual awakening.

Spiritual Awakening Iron Sharpens Iron is praying for and working toward spiritual awakening among American men.
Does anyone doubt that Christian men in our country are a sleeping giant and that this sleeping giant must be awakened? George Barna, Christian sociologist, has recently written that “If the Church is to stem the tide of biblical illiteracy and waning commitment to the Christian faith, men will have to reestablish themselves as the spiritual leaders of their families. The family unit is the key for spiritual growth in our decentralized, relationally isolated culture. The lack of spiritual leadership exhibited by millions of Christian men has significantly hampered the spiritual growth of tens of thousands of well-meaning but spiritually inert families."
